Empower Nutrition - Men's Health

Healthy Lifestyles Start at Home

As weíve been highlighting since the beginning of June, menís optimal health and performance depends on the balance in managing the stresses of daily life, staying physically active to maintain or develop strength, flexibility, stamina, and mental well-being as well as eating (and drinking) right to feel energized, achieve your healthiest weight and strongest body, and ward off many diseases.

A good number of my male clients are familiar with many, if not all, of the components of a healthy lifestyle yet theyíre reluctant to incorporate a healthy eating behavior for fear of being put on a diet that theyíll have to stay on forever in order to stay on track thus missing out on lifeís ësinfulí food pleasures.

Take the case of a client of mine who Iíll call Tom. Tom is a professional guy, deep into his work who is feeling overwhelmed by its demands and feels the need to work on bringing some balance into his life. In order to do this, one of the things he feels he needs to do is to start to eat ëhealthyí by giving up ëmany foodsí he likes and instead eating other foods he doesnít ëparticularly care forí.

As a nutrition therapist, I usually know what will happen with Tomís plan. In time, heíll get tired of the ëhealthyí foods, become obsessively preoccupied with food, and increasingly come to believe that he canít control himself when it comes to ësinfulí foods. In spite of probable weight loss by eating and enjoying less of what he eats, heíll find it difficult to stay on this ëhealthyí food track and will revert to old behaviors.

The failure Tom will face is not that he couldnít stay on track and that he’d revert to old behaviors. The problem is that stepping into the balanced living paradigm with the diet mentality as one of its foundational tenets is sure to disappoint.

In this monthís nutrition lecture, I will address how balanced living can be attained by supporting your bodyís stress response with the right foods, how healthy eating ought to be synonymous with enjoyable and pleasurable eating, and the importance of choosing an eating plan thatís tailored to your preferences, health history, and life to help you stave off fatigue, promote health and vitality, and help you reach your best weight and peak physical performance.

In addition, Iíll also discuss heart facts that can affect every manís romantic life and how a no-nonsense practical approach can help you avoid diet pitfalls.

VitaBot….How to Enroll

Monday, November 2, 2009

VitaBot offers a tool to plan meals and give complete balanced nutrition information. In an industry focused primarily on counting calories, VitaBot was designed to shift the focus toward balanced nutrition. VitaBot uses advanced mathematics to “think” for the user, and helps them to easily put foods together, not just balance calories, but to balance micronutrients as well. VitaBot performs hundreds of thousands of calculations for every set of nutritional suggestions. The equations and the resulting suggestions are designed to allow the nutritional data to speak directly to the user, without personal interpretation.

The VitaBot program requires a one-time activation fee of $40 or a one-time Set-Up Consultation with our Registered Dietician and activation fee for $89. After activation, a re-occurring monthly fee of $20 for clients / $30 for non-clients is required to keep the account active. Please see your trainer or call the studio @ (919) 401-8024 to set up your VitaBot account.

I encourage everyone check out http://becomepowerful.vitabot.com and click on “Watch the Demo.” I truly believe that this system can make or break your progress and hard work at the Empower studio. Enjoy!

Spring Cleaning for Digestive Health

Wednesday, March 25, 2009

My name is Jessica Bottesch and I am co-owner of Empower Personal Training. I am a vegetarian. I eat plenty of raw colorful vegetables, whole fruits and tofu, beans and brown rice are my staple protein. I stay away from high fructose corn syrup and definitely steer clear of trans-fats. All-in-all I am a pretty healthy eater. However, my digestive system didnít always work quite right and I felt weighed down, heavy and bloated- like my body was holding onto stuff it didnít need ñ like my engine was full of sludge. So, I consulted with Cara Demu our registered dietician and just through our initial conversation she made three suggestions that have helped me immensely. Often people worry that vegetarians do not get enough protein ñ but that is not what I was lacking. It turns out I do not digest soy products well, I wasnít getting enough Omega-3 fatty acids and I wasnít drinking enough water. I made three very simple dietary changes and already feel a lot better ñ no more bloating. I very excited to attend this monthís Nutrition Seminar THIS SATURDAY on gentle and natural ways to ìdetoxî and cleanse our colon, kidneys and liver titled:
Spring Cleaning: Organ Maintenance for Vibrant Health and a Slimmer Body
