The Van and a Plan

Group ShotA number of you have seen our new Empower Personal Training On the Move van. Want to know what it is for? Well, the secret is out.

Empower can now come to you, whenever and wherever (okay, not on the moon) you need us. The same fantastic workout you get in our facility is now set to storm Durham with an hour long workout on your schedule.

We’re targeting small groups so if you’ve got some friends who for a long time have been admiring what you’ve been doing now is the time to lay down the gautlet. The more folks you’ve got the better the deal. Bring all those office fans that gaze from behind their desks as you head out to burn some calories. It’s fun, it’s fast and it’s definitely furious.

25 Burpees? Got it. 2 minutes of jumping rope? Yup. Medicine Ball slam relays? Uh-huh. Sledge Hammer axe chops? Definitely.

So if you’re ready and your co-workers are ready, give us a call at (919) 401-8024, get set up and get ready to work. Empower On-the-Move. Fitness and Fun all in one tiny little van.

The Next Big Thing

Empower is kicking off it’s first annual “Peak to Peak Challenge.” Throughout this challenge participants will competewith themselves to reach fitness goals based on adding more cardiovascular activity to their current regimen. The challenge is to reach the top of each of 4 mountain peaks (Mount Mitchell, Mt. Hood, Mt. Rainier, and Mount Everest). Each peak will require participants to earn a specific number of points (see the studio board for the point system).

Upcoming Charity Event

Friday, March 27, 2009

My name is Ronda Michaels, and I am co-owner of Empower Personal Training. I have been deeply touched as we plan our upcoming Empower Fitness Fair on April 18, 2009. We are donating all the proceeds from this event to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in memory of our client and friend Joanne Roberts. At Empower we believe that giving back to the community is an important component of our vision to inspire people to live longer, healthier and happier lives.

While planning this event has been a challenge, it is nothing compared to what a person with MS lives with on a daily basis. It stops people from moving and chips away at one’s physical health. It can be progressive in nature and can ultimately lead to a very debilitated state. Managing MS is an ongoing process for the individual, their families and their caregivers.

This year we were drawn to the MS Society because we saw our client and friend Joanne work so hard at maintaining her physical health even while the disease took its toll. She realized the importance of exercise to help manage her symptoms and even after a long day at work she would ask her husband or one of her caregivers to help her onto the elliptical or bike. She came to Empower Personal Training one day/week to work with me on strength and range of motion exercises. She never gave up!

Please join us on April 18 for the Empower Fitness Fair as we honor Joanne’s memory and raise money to help those that are affected by this horrible disease.

This year’s events include:

Durham’s Largest Boot Camp (registration begins at 9:00 am – boot camp starts at 10:00 am)

Train the Trainer (start time 12:00)

Live Music

Jumping Castle for the kids

Health Vendors

Door Prizes

Raffles

Bake Sale

and more!!

In loving memory of Joanne Roberts

Empower Personal Training is hosting its first annual Fitness Fair on Saturday, April 18 from 9:00 am – 2:00 pm to raise money for the National Multiple Sclerosis in loving memory of our client and friend Joanne Roberts. The Fitness Fair will feature fitness activities for the whole family including Durham’s Biggest Boot Camp, a Train-the-Trainer event, massage demos, smoothie tastings, allied health vendors, fun activities for the kids, live music, door prizes and more.

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic, often-disabling disease of the central nervous system that strikes people in the prime of life. There are more than 4,500 people living with MS in Eastern North Carolina and more than 400,000 nationally. MS affects each person differently and often stops people from moving. Our goal is to “empower” the larger community to get involved in health and wellness all while raising money for this important charity.

Joanne was diagnosed with MS in the 1991 and despite the debilitating effects of the disease she remained very active with her family, in her community and with her work. She always wore a smiling face and was more interested in checking on you than talking about her personal struggles.

Joanne passed away on November 1, 2008 from complications of Multiple Sclerosis. She was a senior scientist, professor of speech and hearing sciences, and a research professor of pediatrics at the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She was one of the most prolific researchers at the institute, with more than 125 publications in scholarly journals. At her death, Joanne was at the peak of her career, held in highest esteem by her colleagues.

The most important part of Joanne’s life was her family – her husband Barry and her two sons Justin and Matthew. Joanne’s personal strength and devotion showed through in both her work and family life. Her passing leaves a void that will not easily be filled.
