Why do you train with Empower Personal Training?
I have two boys under the age of 3 and a wife that is an ex-adventure racer – I was clearly the odd man out when it came to exercise and energy! Having structured workouts at the same time every week with a group of friends (Bootcamp) helped to get me into a good routine. Knowing that you have paid for a 6 am workout and that your friends are waiting for you are strong motivators to get out of bed. The early start time also gets the exercise out of the way before the kids get up.
What are/were are your specific training goals?
Flexibility, weight loss, reduce lower back and joint pain, keeping up with two very young boys
How many times/week do you workout? Bootcamp 2X week, Run 2-3X week, Yoga 1X week
How did you achieve your specific training goals?
I worked out with Matt in Bootcamp for about a year and developed a good base, but continued to struggle with my weight and poor nutrition. I signed up for the Empower “Win Big, Lose Big” challenge in October and recommitted to the Bootcamp and weight loss goals. I started counting net calories with the Calorie Counter books (I now use the software) and tried to eat < 2000 NET calories per day. After losing 20+ pounds during the competition, I realized that the program changed the way I looked at weight loss and fitness.
I started running 2X/week on my own and have also incorporated Yoga weekly for flexibility. One of the best things that I have done is to sign up for 3 consecutive competitive trail runs, each a month apart and each one longer than the last. It has forced me to stay on a schedule and gives me a monthly target. My goal is to be able to run a trail half marathon soon.
You quickly realize that eating well and exercising daily helps you achieve the net 2,000 calorie goal It was very easy to continue the training and diet regimen after the contest was over because of the short term results that I was seeing.
Have you incorporated any of our other services into you health and fitness routine (i.e. massage, nutrition counseling)?
Besides the Win Big, Lose Big challenge, I have started the Next Step Endurance challenge to lower my running times. Also, I have scheduled massage sessions immediately before my trail races. The massages have done a lot to increase hip and lower back flexibility.
What role has this played in helping you reach your goals?
Win Big, Lose Big and Bootcamp have forced me into a routine. Next Step Endurance will help me (I hope) to see direct results on my running times and the massages will help with flexibility.
What are the results?
Decreased weight - Since November, I have lost 42 pounds.
Decreased body fat/increased lean muscle mass - Body fat has decreased 29% and fat weight has decreased 41%
Improved flexibility - Noticeable decrease in lower back/hip flexor/IT band pain. I credit this to Yoga and Bootcamp work.
Lowered blood pressure - Not sure what the baseline was, but blood pressure is currently 110 over 70. Standing HR is 68. This is very close to my high school athletic days.
Improved cardiovascular endurance - When I started, I had a difficult time running/walking 3 miles. I now routinely run 8-10 miles and completed my last 8K trail run in 9:00/mile time.
Increased core strength - Noticeable decrease in lower back/hip flexor/IT band pain. I credit this to Yoga and Bootcamp work.
How do you feel?
Overall I feel less stressed, more energetic and more confident. It has been great to get the encouragement from the trainers and owners of Empower. They take a lot of pride in seeing me achieve my goals. It also feels great to get the comments on Facebook and with my friends when I post/tell the weekly results.
Do you have any words of advice to others that are interested in attaining specific health and fitness goals?
I originally set big goals (lose 50 pounds, run a half marathon, etc.). However, I realized that I had to change the way I thought about exercise and food to achieve the goals and that did not happen overnight. Therefore, I gave myself long lead times and attainable short term goals to make sure I achieved the longer term targets. For example, I signed up for events that would force me to train outside of the gym (like running a trail 8K or a road race). I also started logging net calorie intake and kept a food journal. Once I started seeing the short term results, I realized that I could achieve the long term goals.
WAY TO GO HUNTER!!!
